character creation and world-building practice

World-building and character creation project as a part of a university project. We were tasked to create a character based on a world where America was never colonised by Europeans.
It was an interesting project considering the amount of research that went into researching indigeonous tribes, both historically and in the current day.
It was important to be sensitive and avoid stereotypes as much as possible, while also being aware of the culture and applying it to the character.
I decided to work with a lot of colours, giving him a lot of Turquoise gems, as traditionally wore a lot by Native Americans. Also, the use of feathers, which have been dropped by his bird (A red-tailed hawk) every so often, he wraps one around his hair, tied to his belt hoop and on a necklace around his neck. He also wears cowboy boots, using feathers as ruffles. The idea was that Native America would have been a mix of traditional Native American culture and globalised trends, much like other countries.
I would also like to think it would've been very strong and self-sufficient.

Now, Mato is a psychadelic rock musician who's main form of instrument is the double-head drums who lives with a red-tailed hawk which he calls Ayasha. He has band-mates, who he meets with every day.
The two story-boards I created are simple comics that show his day-to-day life. For example, him practicing on the drums, or his morning routine with his bird.
