cinderalla re-telling project
This was a big project for me, focusing on the story-telling aspect through character design, concept art and sequential illustration.
The reason why I chose to redesign Cinderella is partly due to my fascination with queer retellings of old stories. The general question I had when tackling this project was if Cinderella was a transgender woman, how that changes the story?
The final thing I created was a full page illustration for the scene Cinderella and Prince Charming first met. This was based on the live action film, where they meet in the forest.
I left out my 3D model from my development, which I created for a background for an animation I was not able to finish. I created a ball-room and started with a 3D animation before the semester finished.
This project was incredibly fun and required so much research and development. I learned so much about creating characters, storyboarding and 3D modelling. I think the only things I would develop more is the full page illustration (add dynamic lighting) and the comic panels (add backgrounds to the panels).
I thought about a lot of different points in the story and what would be best to illustrate, such as the scene Cinderella enters the ballroom, or the first instance she and Prince Charming meet. In the end I decided to go with the longest storyboard I did, the instance where Cinderella goes through the roughest part of her story, and also the part of the story that is most different to the original source.
I started out with sillhouettes of the clothing ideas while researching what people would have wore in the mid to late 1800s.
I took some of these into the final designs of the characters.
Cinderella has three designs, one for her masculine-presenting part of the story, another for her feminine-presenting part and THEN her ball dress. Everyone else had two different clothing designs... apart from Prince Charming.
I then created clean lining for the different clothing the characters wear throughout the story.
After that, I tried out some different colour combinations for the outfits. It was important to keep Cinderella to a blue-y grey colour scheme, so when it came to her ball-dress and her casual feminine outfit I tried my best to keep to this, however when it came to her masculine outfit, it is stripped of any blue to show a lack of her identity.
